Welcome and Introductions
Margretta welcomed everyone to PTO and asked for any changes on February minutes. There were no changes so Juliann moved to approve and it was approved.
Principal’s Remarks
There will be a lobby day on April 13th for school funding changes. This will take place during the day, starting at 8:30 am until the afternoon. There will be a march and then a rally.
Treasurer’s Report
Mary Lynn Fernandez is requesting a grant for the language lab. She has a grant request in for $1,500 and is asking the PTO to fund the rest of $1,675 for purchasing the Rosetta Stone Classroom 3 online subscription. She provided a handout with the details of the program. There was a lengthy question and answer period about this. It was decided to vote on this at the next PTO meeting in April. (Note: Mary Lynn has since rescinded this request.)
Teacher Request – Amber Billington & Shannon Burgert are asking the PTO to reimburse them $305 for funds needed for the Museum Camp-In. Juliann moved to approve, Margretta seconded and it was approved.
Ashley reported that the PTO accounts at this time are:
Checking - $13,302.42
Money Market - $41,838.22
Ashley then provided a handout of the PTO budget up to date. Discussion on how the year was progressing compared to budget followed.
Pat Heinz-Pribyl commented on the school budget. She noted that Fireside had to have their budgets in for the 3 different levels of cuts (2.25%, 5.25% and 8.25%) on Friday, March 12, 2010. Pat has spoken with PTO for help in offsetting budget cuts. PTO has agreed to provide $5,000 at the 2.25% level cut and will work these into the budget for the 2010-2011 school year.
Co-Chairs Remarks
School Improvement Ideas: Fireside was offered a free dishwasher for the staff lounge. However, in order to run electricity to power it, the cost was found to be too high (more than $10,000) therefore we cannot accept the dishwasher.
PTO Calendar for 2010-2011 – There was a handout showing the PTO calendar for this year. We discussed potentially cutting items that we feel are unnecessary for next year. It was agreed upon that we should only have one Skate City function, and only one winter activity. Next year’s co-chairs will determine which to keep.
PTO Positions for 2010-2011 – We are looking for one Co-Chair to work with Margretta, a treasurer and secretary as well as a few other positions for the next school year. A list of Open PTO Positions will be emailed out to the school soon. Please let Tam or Margretta know if you are interested.
Committee Reports/Upcoming Events
Olympic Read-a-Thon – Heidi Day provided a handout on the money raised this year. Just over $8,000 was raised which is $2,000 more than last year. Cathy Finleon suggested we begin the Read-a-thon on March 2nd next year, since it is Read Across America Day.
Skate City – Everyone had a great time and we made $192 in profit from the 128 who attended.
Disco Dance – We had 169 attendees, with plenty of hats and cookies for everyone. Some children were running around in the school though and if this were to be held again, parent help would be needed to keep the kids in the gym or cafeteria.
Teacher Conferences – We had a lot of parent participation and the teachers all loved the food ideas. All in all a great event.
Fireside Falcons Gear – Pat Heinz-Pribyl had an artist design three ideas for the new logo for $150. The three designs were presented to the PTO and student council will vote on their favorite logo soon.
Garden to Table – The garden is going well. The Big Dig will be on 3/29/10 at 1:30 p.m. Volunteers are welcome. We will be planting lettuce on 4/2/10.
Turn off the TV Week – We are having a poster contest for the students. We are also having Fireside night at KT’s BBQ on 4/19/10. Becky is asking for the funds raised from KT’s to go to the library. Margretta motioned to approve and it was approved.
Science Fair – We have applications for 108 projects (from 138 students) this year. This approximately the same number as last year. We still need a few judges but other then that everything is on track.
PEN Wellness Night – 4/17/10 at 8:00 there will be a talk about Homework Myths at Naropa University, and on 4/27/10 from 6:30-8:00 at Fireside there will be two talks on wellness. One will focus on communicating with your kids, and the other will be about nutrition.
Staff & Appreciation Week – May 3-7 – Ann Riedl is asking for help and ideas for this week.
Expanded “Friends of Fireside” program – We received the go ahead from Mrs. H.P. and Heidi Day will start working on this program after spring break.
