Welcome: PTO members and attendees introduced themselves.
Minutes: Meeting minutes from the August 23rd meeting were approved with no
changes.
ESL Student request: (Gay Salim)
There is a need for a Parent Liaison in each classroom to help coordinate and
help facilitate kids from different cultures to participate in after school
activities. Research shows that ESL students who participate outside of school
do significantly better than those that do not participate. They develop skills
beyond the academic arena and have a stronger connection to the community. We
currently have 47 ESL students who could potentially benefit now from this idea.
Help from the Parent Liaison could be finding a car pool, identifying any
student needs, or acquiring sporting equipment for activities. Anyone with ideas
or suggestions on how to put this into action, please contact Jill Andrews or
Maia Jourgensen.
Fall Feast Update: (Becca Fischer)
- We have many vendors and great entertainment this year. Our cost is ~$1500 plus
the cost of all the newspaper ads.
-
We still need many volunteers for setting up.
- We also need a pickup truck for hauling ice, tubs, tents, etc.
- If teachers could reuse their tip jars from last year it would be helpful.
- Fireside staff servers will get a new bandana this year to wear.
- Scholarships for Feast tickets are available if needed. Contact Beccca Fischer.
- We would like to see as many families attend as possible because it promises to
be a fun time!!
Principals Remarks:
- The first day of school went very smoothly. Thank you parents for getting
your kids here on time and having them prepared.
- Thank you for the teacher brunch on the first day of school. It was a treat
and very much appreciated.
Welcome to new staff members:
Secretary/Cashier: Suyapa Koeller-Amador
Custodial Helper: Ben Bussard
ParaEducator: Susan Anspach
ParaEducator: Claire Huerter
Monday, September 20th is a teacher in-service day. Students academic
achievements will be analyzed and goals will be set for the year.
Two parent representatives, or more, are needed to attend meetings in a
partnership with the Parent Engagement Network (P.E.T.). This network helps to
foster resiliency in our school age youth to reduce high risk behaviors. The
expectation from the school district is to try to send a few parents to as many
meetings as possible. A youth risk behavior survey was done of junior and high
school students. The statistics were very frightening. We need to help our
children lead healthier lives by creating a strong foundation for making good
decisions. Parents who participate will be asked to share their information with
the PTO.
Fireside Directory: (Janet McSmith)
- Parents can go online to fill in their information for the Fireside
directory. The information is private and it doesnt take long to complete. There
are forms in the office if computer access is not available for parents.
- Many advertisers have shown an interest in placing ads in the directory. A
new rule to be enforced this year is that the advertiser must have a student
currently attending Fireside.
- An ad on the outside cover will cost $100 and an inside cover ad will now be
$50.
- Thank you to Brent Ayers for developing our online directory sign up.
PTO Co-Chair Remarks: (Maia Jourgensen and Jill Andrews)
- PTO positions still open are the Co-Fundraisers and Grant Committee.
Fundraising is already in place so we just need someone to oversee the projects.
It shouldn't be too difficult or time consuming.
- We need a person to oversee the wrapping paper fundraiser. Its a short two
week project starting October 8th.
- Chris Lucke has volunteered to take care of the soup labels.
- More than one representative can attend the District Parent Council meetings.
The next one is September 22nd.
Treasurer Report: (Jennifer Piper)
- The budget was handed out and approved for the 2004-2005 school year.
- Up to $200 was approved to purchase more letters for the outdoor sign.
- Teacher allocations went up to $300 and $500 for new teachers to set up their
classrooms.
- Tie dye T-shirts brought in ~$460 at the Labor Day celebration.
Fundraising Report:
- We expect the same amount of Gold C and Entertainment books sold this year.
- We still need to stress the money making potential of grocery certificates.
Open Forum:
- Meredith Eddy, Jill Andrews, Craig Christopher, Brent Ayers, and David Stone
are working on updating the Fireside website. A link to the PTO website will be
added.
- The Labor Day parade was a big success and featured 75 people representing
Fireside.
Meeting adjourned at 8:07 pm

Minutes: Meeting minutes from the September 13th meeting were approved with
no changes.
Principals Remarks: (Craig Christopher)
- Thanks to all the coordinators and helpers for a fabulous Fall Feast! Despite
the weather, it turned out wonderful and it had a great community feeling.
- No Child Left Behind Act: We met our 15 targets based on ethnicity, gender,
ESL, TAG, free and reduced lunch...etc., and made sure kids progressed in a
year. We also made 140 out of 142 cells. The two cells we missed were related to
high school and special education. Its very hard to meet all cells as a large
school district but we did improve from last year.
- The school calendar committee requested that our PTO fill out a survey
regarding proposed changes to next years school schedule.
Co-Chairs Remarks: (Jill Andrews)
- Mrs. Schafer: The school district wants to implement a new math program for
kindergartners and is currently looking at six different types. Every Day Math
is the one our kindergarten teachers favor and would like the PTO to help fund
it. The pricing per teacher is $155 for manuals and $326 for manipulatives. This
is a very hands on program and it has a strong home school connection. If Every
Day Math is adopted by the school district then money from the district budget
could be used. A vote was conducted and it was unanimously agreed that PTO
funding would be contingent upon the school districts final choice of a math
program.
- Kim Nguyen would like to buy a digital camera but needs $82 to help cover the
cost. PTO unanimously approved her request.
- Elise Graninger would like to purchase 60 hands-on physics experiments for
all the classes to enjoy. This is through the outreach program of the Department
of Physics at C.S.U. She would need $300 to make the purchase. Mr. Christopher
stated that we are eligible to apply for more TAG funding and this may cover the
$300. Further investigation will be conducted.
- Coffee house is on October 29th. We are limited to 30 three minutes acts on a
first come, first serve basis. Contact Linda Pollack for questions or to help
out.
- Maia received more letters for the sign.
- November 5th is Friday popcorn day and it coincides with spirit day.
- Fireside Festival is a no spending event so do we want to include an
inflatable slide again or not? Last year we did not lose money. PTO would
consider giving Ileane Olson and Dianne Fraser, coordinators, a reasonable
budget. More information will be needed.
- Wrapping paper sales end October 25th. This fund raising event is being
conducted by parent request.
- Joli Lofstedt has volunteered to be our Fund Raising Coordinator. Thanks Joli!
Volunteer Coordinator: (Melaney Ubel)
-
Our turkey give-away for the teachers will be on November 19th. We currently
have 16 volunteers to donate turkeys for our ~40 member staff. Please contact
Melaney if you would like to donate.
Communications: (Meredith Eddy)
-
Our website update is being conducted in two stages. Right now its being fixed
to get ready for open enrollment, which will start the end of November. We still
need a graphic designer and volunteers to help write the 20 different sections
of information included for our viewers.
- The next meeting is Monday, November 1st at 8 a.m.
District Parent Council Meeting: (Lura Vernon)
-
The last meeting took place on September 29th and you can view the meetings
minutes on their website: http://www.bvsd.k12.co.us/schools/dpc/minutes.html.
-
The board wants to change fund raising policies and wants our PTO to consider
approving their changes or sending along our input. Questions or opinions can be
emailed to sheri.williams@bvsd.org. The main point of controversy is whether or
not a schools PTO can use their funds to hire additional staff. The amount of a
PTO's funding would be limited to their schools S.R.A. (school resource
allocation). Our question is how will this affect our school funding from the
district? Further discussion is required.
Treasurer Report: (Jen Piper)
- PTO authorizes Jennifer Piper and Leslie Gardener to open a separate account
for raffle proceeds at First National Bank. A vote was conducted and unanimously
approved.
- Box Tops for Education made $1200 last year so please keep on contributing!
Fall Feast Feedback: (Martha Brunette)
The Feast drew in more people from Louisville besides our Fireside families. The
face painting was very popular and the band was great! An approximate profit is
$12,800!!
A wrap-up meeting hasn't taken place yet, but a few future suggestions might be:
- Have a location for a child lost and found.
- Include a more central volunteer location.
- Committee members lost some personal items like extension cords, staple
guns...etc. Include these items in next years budget to prevent more loss.
- Could possibly use a raffle cheat sheet so all the choices are known.
- No more blow up bats from Chipotles.
Open Forum:
- Mr. L requested, in writing, PTO funding for two Leap Frog pads at $19 a
piece and two Fisher Price Power Touch pads at $35 each plus batteries. PTO
voted and unanimously approved $120 for Mr. L to make his purchases.
- We have about 21,000 soup label points and how would we like to redeem them?
It was suggested that classrooms could use more balls for recess time. Chris
Lucke will contact Mrs. T to discuss which balls are best.
Meeting adjourned at 8:25 pm
Next PTO meeting is November 15th at 6:30 pm in the school library

The trees should reach 40 feet in height and will provide great shade for waiting parents.

courtyard. The benches will be colored to match the color of the schools bricks. The school
district will grade the yard for us.
- Our PTO has been asked to donate $100 to the Paint the Snow Plows community project.

Should PTO create a fund for all teachers to request money from? PTO will check
bylaws about creating a fund to cover these non-payments. Further discussion will
continue at the next meeting.

District Parent Council Meeting: (Lura Vernon)

Minutes: Meeting minutes from April 12th were approved with no changes.
Principals Remarks: (Craig Christopher)
- Thank you for the wonderful staff appreciation week. Cathy Healy and Lisa
Corboy did a great job along with all the other volunteers.
- Thank you to the PTO for funding the Retirement Tea. Many B.V.S.D.
administrators were present and the Fire Choir did a great performance!
- Thank you so much for the Friday night event! The last month of his career
has been phenomenal. The courtyard dedication was beyond his imagination. The
past 16 years at Fireside have been the best of his life. Its been full of
wonderful memories of children, events, and staff members. He is the luckiest
person he knows!! Thanks to the PTO for all their support for himself and the
staff. Fireside is a unique place! He will definitely come back to visit and of
course, help Pat with her transition.
- Emma Ruwitch is retiring this year. Karen Donohue will take her place in
first grade. Interviews have started for a fourth 1st grade teacher and for a
half time special ed. person.
- Craig has met with Pat. She's thrilled to soon be a part of Fireside. Shell be
here for the Fireside Festival. Craig will help her as much as she needs to get
the school ready for next year. Her official start date is August 1st.
- We have a part time Kindergarten position open.
- Cathy Finleon would like to use her award money towards creating a long
needed resource library for the teachers. It would contain multiple copies of
readers at many different reading levels. Right now, a teacher may have only
four copies of one book when they need six or more. This would centralize
everything. The school district may be able to provide the carpenter, but would
PTO be willing to fund the cost of supplies? At this point, a location for these
shelves has not been found. The teachers will form a committee to help plan it
and come up with the cost. We will address this further at the next meeting.
Co-Chairs Remarks: (Jill Andrews and Maia Jourgensen)
- The Fireside Festival is set for Friday, June 3rd. Please sign up to
volunteer as we need many helpers. We will also have a cake to celebrate our new
principal.
- Maryann Schafer suggested a day set aside for volunteers to help spruce up
the school grounds. Trim, rake, weed, and pick up stray garbage. A day will need
to be decided upon possibly around the start of school. It will be announced for
all to know and help!
- We still need a parent volunteer to take over attending the District Parent
Council Meetings. They meet once a month in Boulder.
- We also need volunteers to do the Labor Day Parade and make t-shirts.
- We need a volunteer to run our Movie Night or perhaps change it to a dance?
- We have many new parents volunteering for next year. PTO voted to approve
their new positions and WELCOME!!
- We will need to advertise the Fall Feast at the Labor Day parade. Last year
we had crayon packets with the information printed on them.
- Our new Crossing Guard Coordinator will be John Kelin. We still need guards
to sign up now for next year so they will be in place in time for the first week
of school. We will have a volunteer sign up table at the Festival.
- PTO bought many school supplies for the Free & Reduced Lunch kids last
year. Jill and Maia had to double the amount they thought was needed. Extra
supplies from other parents are always welcome.
Treasurer: (Jennifer Piper)
- The Math-a-thon made ~$8,000 in total.
- Jill, Maia, and Jennifer will check the PTO by-laws about adding a line(s) to
the budget. The PTO has a discretionary fund line that could be broken down into
something more specific.
Fund Raising Report: (Joli Lofstedt)
- The Grocery certificates made about $6000 this year. Lori Commander manages
the account and said it is an increase from last year but still only about 10%
of our community is using them. She will be selling certificates at the Fireside
Festival.
- We will also be participating in Pizza Pals with Old Chicago. We can buy 500
certificates at $6 each and sell them for $11. The certificate is good for a
pizza worth up to $19! Further information about availability will be coming
soon.
- We can also purchase and sell bracelets fashioned after the Lance Armstrong
bracelets. Ours would have Fireside stamped on them.
- We will be selling Fireside sweatshirts along with the t-shirts next year.
- We do plan on having the Math-a-thon again next year.
- The wrapping paper fund raiser was quite successful so well have that again
and maybe combine it with the Gold C and Entertainment books.
Volunteer Coordinator: (Melaney Ubel)
- Melaney would like to give teachers pies instead of turkeys next year at
Thanksgiving time. Great idea!
- A table will be set up at the Fireside Festival for volunteers to sign up for
next year.
Communication: (Meredith Eddy)
- The final page of our website is just about done!
- We will need to post the new school supply list on the website.
- Send Meredith ANY school news or accomplishments that can be put into the
newspaper.
Open Forum:
- PTO presented Craig with a beautiful, framed picture of a falcon. The picture
was provided by Lisa Dierauf who works for the Boulder County Parks and Open
Space. The PTO thanked Craig for all his support and vast knowledge. He came to
every meeting and has always been open to help and contribute in any way. Craig,
you will be greatly missed!!!!!!!
- Angie Anderson suggested that the PTO sponsor an evening to present political
issues that affect us all. (ex. TABOR) An evening where both sides of an issue
are presented would help inform parents. A discussion ensued about possibly
creating a small committee of four or five members to decide, anticipate, hash
out problems, and then recommend to the PTO which political issues to present.
Further discussion is needed.
- How about PTO sponsoring a night to showcase Fireside parents who have a home
business?
- Thank you to Jill and Maia for all the planning and organizing they did for
the new courtyard! It was a job very well done!
Meeting was adjourned at 8:30 pm.
Have a great summer everyone!
